GLUCOSE TOLERANCE TEST
· The glucose tolerance test is a medical test in which glucose is given and blood sample take forward to determination how quick it is cleared from the blood.
· GTT plays a crucial role in diagnosing disorders related to glucose metabolism, such as diabetes mellitus and pre-diabetes.
· There are several types of GT used in different condition but the most common one of them is oral glucose test or OGTT.
· Glucose serves as the primary source of energy for cells in the human body.
· The GTT is usually given to pregnant women’s during 24th and 28th week of pregnancy.
· This test is also given to pregnant who has diabetic symptoms.
· Beside that GTT is also given to the patient who have high Glucose level in blood.
PREPRATION OF GTT
· Inform the doctor about the varied prescription of drug you are taking because certain drug can be false result
· Have a normal diet like any other day
· Fasting is required for 8 to 10 hours you might want to avoid using the washroom period to testing as urine samples may be needed
· on margin of testing do not smoke or have coffee or caffeine based product
· GTT is not done in sick person
GTT PROCEDURE
· Collect a baseline blood sample from the patient, usually by venipuncture, to measure fasting blood glucose levels.
· Prepare a glucose solution containing a standardized amount of glucose dissolved in water.
· Now tell the patient to drink the solution in 5 - 10 minute duration.
· After the ingestion of the glucose solution.
· Collect the blood sample at interval of 30 minutes, 1 hours or sometime 2 hours.
· After the test sample is measured in laboratory through enzymatic assays or automated analyzers.
RESULT
· Fasting Blood Glucose: 95 mg/dL
· 1-Hour Post-Glucose: 165 mg/dL
· 2-Hour Post-Glucose: 130 mg/dL
· 3-Hour Post-Glucose: 110 mg/dL
· Fasting Blood Glucose: The fasting blood glucose level of 95 mg/dL falls within the normal range (typically less than 100 mg/dL), indicating no fasting hyperglycemia.
· Post-Glucose Levels:
1-Hour Post-Glucose: The blood glucose level at 1 hour post-glucose ingestion is 165 mg/dL. This value exceeds the normal range (typically less than 140 mg/dL), suggesting impaired glucose tolerance.
2-Hour Post-Glucose: The blood glucose level at 2 hours post-glucose ingestion is 130 mg/dL, which is within the normal range. However, it's important to note that the value was elevated at the 1-hour mark.
3-Hour Post-Glucose: The blood glucose level at 3 hours post-glucose ingestion is 110 mg/dL, remaining within the normal range.
GTT NORMAL VALUE
· Fasting Blood Glucose: 95 mg/dL
· 1-Hour Post-Glucose: 165 mg/dL
· 2-Hour Post-Glucose: 130 mg/dL
· 3-Hour Post-Glucose: 110 mg/dL
BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVEL
· The normal blood glucose level is 70-110 mg/dl
· Post meal plasma glucose 110-140 mg/dl
· Random plasma glucose 72-110 mg/dl
SIDE EFFECTS OF GTT
· There is a risk attached with GTT which are follows
People with high level of sugar have following side effect :
(I)Nausea
(II) Stomach discomfort
(III)Diarrhea
(IV) Constipation
• Risk attached to drawing blood sample including the following
(I)Swelling and redness at puncture
(II)Site infection as puncture site fever
