ALCOHOL INTOXICATION

INTRODUCTION

  • Alcohol intoxication is a condition associated with drinking too much alcohol in a short amount of time.

  • It affect body temperature, heart rate & breathing.

  • Usually liver does a good job of keeping alcohol toxin from getting into your bloodstream but if too much alcohol is taken in short time liver may not able to keep up.

  • This condition can lead to various physical & mental damage, affecting behavior & feeling.

SYMPTOMS

  • Symptoms in alcohol intoxication include:

    • slurred speech

    • confusion

    • long pause between breath

    • slow heartbeat

    • low body temperature

    • slow response

    • balance difficulty

    • nausea

    • vomiting

    • vision problem

CAUSES

  • The main cause of alcohol intoxication is consuming too much alcohol in short time. When you drink too much alcohol in short duration the body didn’t consuming the amount.

RISK FACTORS

  • Risk Factors for Alcohol Intoxication include:

  1. Drinking at Young Age: Younger individual are more susceptible to alcohol intoxication due to low tolerance levels & less experience with drinking.

  2. Body weight: large people absorb alcohol slowly than smaller one.

  3. Mixing alcohol with medication: taking certain types of drugs can increase the rate of alcohol intoxication.

  4. Lack of awareness: not understanding the danger affect of alcohol can increase risk.

  5. Health condition: taking alcohol during medication & other health injury can lead to alcohol intoxication

  6. Drinking alone: drinking alone an individual consuming too much alcohol.

  7. Percentage of alcohol in your drink

DIAGNOSIS

  • Physical examination:

    • Blood pressure

    • Heart rate

    • Temperature

  • Laboratory test:

o Complete blood count

o Liver function test

o Electrolyte level

TREATMENT

  • In cases of severe dehydration or electrolyte imbalances intravenous fluids (IV) may be administered for hydration & electrolyte balance.

  • Provide supplemental oxygen

COMPLICATION

  • Complications of Alcohol Intoxication:

    • Accident or injuries

    • Alcohol poisoning

    • Hypothermia

    • Electrolyte imbalance

    • Memory loss

    • Heart attack

    • Coma

    • Death

PREVENTION

  • Avoid drinking alcohol

  • Do not drink in empty stomach

  • Do not drink during health problems

  • Take limited amount of alcohol

  • Drink slowly

  • Drink with non alcoholic drinks like water which hydrate your body.
